Psychoanalytic Approach upon the Korean Folktale Kongjui-Patjui
Lyoo In-Kyoon

Abstract
The Korean folktale, Kongiui-Patjui was psychoanalytically studied upon the assumption that we can get some insight into the psychodynamics of a people through studies of their myths, legends, and folktales. The main conflict of this story is one between the stepmother and the daughter of the dead wife. This conflict is repeated, in a more intensive and overt aspect, in the conflicts between Kongiui and Fatjui, a substitute for the stepmother. In this conflict, Kongjui¡¯s husband can be interpreted as a substitute for her father. Conclusions of this study are as follows : 1) Oedipus Complex is working in the development of plot of the stories which deal with the conflicts between the stepmother un the daughter of the dead wife. 2) In Kongjui-Patjui, one of the most popular Korean falktales, the presence of the Oedipus Complex of Kongjui could be demonstrated. 3) Therefore, it is concluded that in the unconscious of Korean people exists Oedipus Complex.
